SKETCHBOOK - PORTFOLIO RESEARCH & DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
THE BRIEF
The project focuses on preserving Malaysia's multi-cultural costumes' authenticity. While highlighting traditional costumes in international fashion without destroying their value. This project aims to help future generations recognize the variety and ornamentation of Malaysian traditional costumes and appreciate Malaysia's arts and cultural heritage so that every artwork and creation of our ancestors will be passed down through the generations, especially by introducing Malaysian traditional costumes to the world.
Interpret the personal message as well as the story interpretation using one cohesive RTW collection comprised of three LOOKS. This ready-to-wear collection includes two evening-wear looks (model size 12) and one avant-garde look for a plus-size model. Have to create an original design and a cause to champion based on any traditional costumes that may influence the fashion industry and trends.
A. MIND MAPPING / RESEARCH
Mind Map
Before I start to choose the subject matter, I start to do mind mapping. When I things of Malaysia I think of Malaysia food. Through my research, I found that our Malaysian food is in the top 3 of the most delicious in the world. Then I list out the food that can be found easily in Malaysia.
Next is the Petronas Twin Tower we call KLCC. It is the building that is in the top 10 of the World Tallest Building list. KLCC is the landmark of our country, so I think what subject can be recognized in Malaysia is our national flower 'Hibiscus'. other than that there is a world bigger flower in the world is call Rafflesia also in Malaysia so I also put it on the mind map.
Furthermore is our Fruit. Malaysia is a tropical country, and we are one of the leading producers of tropical fruit in the world I am so lucky to be born here. Therefore I also list the fruit that is in Malaysia.
Lastly, Malaysia is one of the countries that has multicultural in the world. Malaysia does not even live together, we also share our culture, like a game, instruments, and also traditional culture.
B. RESEARCH ON SUBJECT MATTER INSPIRATION
Since the topic given is about the National costume of Malaysia, which mean is to create a garment that can be shown to represent Malaysia, I chose hibiscus to be my subject matter because hibiscus is Malaysia's national flower.
This is the diagram of the hibiscus to let me study more about what a hibiscus looks like and how it lives by itself.
According to my research, I found out that actually hibiscus has a hundred specie and Malaysia's national flower is one of the species name Shoesblackplant under hibiscus.
Bellow is to introduce some of the species of the hibiscus.
Define on hibiscus
The other function of hibiscus.
Introduce the same species but a different look of the flower.

Introduce the same species but a different look of the flower.
C. MOOD BOARD
Creating this mood board, I added in hibiscus, colour pallet, hibiscus petals texture, and title.
D. CONCEPTUAL STORY NARRATIVE
- Explain how you achieved this imagination and the metaphor that I created as well as the relevance of your recycled materials
- show your finalised conceptual story narrative (this one u already wrote less than 250 words).
The hibiscus is Malaysia's national flower in Malay called 'Bunga Raya'. The 'Bunga' means flower, 'Raya' mean celebration. So, I would like to take this opportunity to create a sense of celebrating women who this day are more confident and freedom to have their own rights, their own career, and are highly educated.
E. DESIGN CONSTRUCTIONS
10 Initial ideal development
In the first stage, I used the cut-and-paste technique to achieve my 10 initial designs. I remove and cut some parts of the flower and zoom big or small petals and arrange it to get the silhouette I want.
Next is from this 10 initial ideal development finalize out 3 looks.
A initial development
B initial development
C initial development
After ideal development, I consult with MR.JR about my design. And we finalize that we are going to use B01 for one of my looks for evening wear.
Since we only came out with one design, I need to design more initial idea development so I choose to use A to do more initial ideal development.
A1 A1-01 A1-02 A1-03 A1-04 A1-05
These are the other 5 initial ideal development.
In this initial ideal development, I finalize using A1-01 and A1-03 for my final look.
F. TECHNICAL DRAWING
After doing my initial ideal development, I straight away translate it by refining the line on the body figure so that in the end is easy for me to drape.

| TASK 2: Fabric Manipulation and samplings |
Fabric manipulation sample 1
Below is the step of how I do my fabric manipulation.
Cut the scuba fabric and net fabric into petal shapes. Put double interfacing between them.
After adding the double-side interfacing, iron them together and make sure the double interfacing is melt compilated, so that both of the fabrics can stick together. And then i fold the fabric where i want to add in the line, and sew it in line, so that the outcome will look more like petals.
After that, i also exlored on other different net fabrin and colour tone .
At first, I just fold them and straight away sew the line that I want to create the texture. The outcome looks similar to the petals. And this image I show, I'm cut the bigger petals shape on the scuba fabric. The fabric is not standing at the end and i have to pin the fabric upper a bit only the fabric will extand more wider abit.
Therefore, i added the long metal wire between the line that i want to created. The wire is atjustable where can be band to any direction i want.
This is the outcome of the petls that has added the wire.
Other than doing the texture in the shape of the petals, I was also inspired by the curve shape from the petals. Therefore, I also try to explore curve shape texture.
I started to draw out the shape that I'm gonna use,and cut it out from the crepe fabric and net fabric so that it look flowy.
Next, I'm going to add the bidding on the curved side fo the fabric so that it cover the side which will stop the thread to fall down and it also help the outcome look more neat. After i finish sew the bidding , I also do the overlockon the other side, So that it look more neat.
Then I arrange them equally and sew them on the net fabric so that it is easy for people to see how it work from the back.
I also explore on the different colour of net fabric and without bidding on the crepe fabric.
In the meantime, we also have a talk with MR. Andrew Tan. He when through my design and my subject matter, he like it so much.
The next day, we also having Miss Zaihani Zain to have a talk. She acknowledge me how important the design progress is.
Final Task: National Costume of Malaysia (Ready to wear collection)
- Interpret the personal message as well as the story interpretation using one cohesive RTW collection comprised of three LOOKS. This ready-to-wear collection includes two evening-wear looks (model size 12) and one avant-garde look for a plus-size model. Have to create an original design and a cause to champion based on any traditional costumes that may influence the fashion industry and trends.
This is the out come of my first look, which is for the model size. I added the petals at the top front and back. Bottom is something like mermaid dress.

For my second look, which is for the Avant Garde. After I done for my base, I drape my petals by using mahjong paper first before I cut and sew them.
The outcome for my look 2. The top is all adding the petals surrond it ,and at the bottom it is a dress and adding the texture of the curve panel.
For the bidding I change the bidding into red colour so that the overall of the garment will look more match.
