EXERCISE 03: Choose TWO principles from Harmony / Unity / Symbol / Word and image. Create 1 design for each chosen principle

| 2 Design in total /

In this exercise, I have watched lecturers 4 and 5. The lecturer's video introduces to me the principle of harmony, unity, scale, proportion, symbol, and words and images. After watching finish the video, I choose to do the principle of unity and harmony.

Design 1: Principle of Unity

An image containing a variety of shapes, which demonstrate all the design principles while maintaining unity

Unity is a design principle that unites all other design principles inside a piece of work, allowing each individual aspect to cohabit with one another to create an aesthetically pleasing design.

My exploration:

Initially, I merely used varied colour tones and, using the same diamond shape, arranged it accordingly to achieve unity. However, the end result appears to be a principle of repetition.

For my final outcome, I used two different types of Japanese patterns in each diamond to create more unity, with the same shape but different patterns. This design represents the idea that everyone is unique and special. We don't have to be someone; we just have to be ourselves.

Design 2: Principle of Harmony

Harmony is the principle of art that creates cohesiveness by stressing the similarities of separate but related parts. It made the same theme, aesthetic style, or mood.

My exploration:

Using macaroon colours of yellow, pink, purple, and blue to demonstrate harmony. This design is based on flowers. To avoid the shark effect, I used small little flowers in a light tone colour in the background. However, Dr. Pauline informed me that the general appearance does not appear to be gregarious. If she had this design on paper, she would trim down one part of the flower to utilise it. Which means it does not look like harmony.

So I try to remove the foreground bloom and replace it with more little flowers. The end result appears to be harmonic, yet it is far too simplistic.

I remove the tiny flower, leaving only the colour in the background, and then add the flower and some leaves.

I also applying with different scale.

Final outcome, I have made the design overall look more balanced and neat since I have applied different colours to it. This design tells us that we can't be alone or an individual to achieve something. It's not only difficult but also inefficient to succeed. We have to cooperate with other so that we can make things easier and faster.

Feedback from lecturer

_

I have a good sense of colour; it is kind of a give for me. And  hope to see more exploration of me. I know what I'm doing; it's just that I have to improve my knowledge and vocabulary. When I communicate with my friends, I can try to communicate with them in English instead of Chinese. Because my sentence structure is a direct translation from Chinese, the sentences are a bit confusing. I have to practise more on that.

Self-reflection for the week

_

During the consultation time with Dr. Pauline, she advised me that maybe I could go aboard to study. At that moment, I can learn different things and look at things in different perspectives because different countries have different cultures, which means a lot of things to learn. After talking with Dr. Pauline, I have thought of going to study aboard just that during this voyage. My parents care about my safety and will not allow me to go overseas, so I'm planning to go aboard next year.
