EXERCISE 02: Choose TWO principle from Emphasis / Balance / Repetition / movement.Create 1 design for each chosen prinple

| 2 Design in total |

Week 2 exercise is to watch Lecturer 2 pre-recorded, it has introduced me to the principle of balance, the golden ratio, and the rule of thirds. But the exercise 2 mentions that we can choose two principles from emphasis, balance, repetition, and movement, so I also watch lecturer 3 pre-recorded for me to know what repetition and movement are. In lecture 3 pre-recordedit mentions about principles of repetition, movement, and hierarchy.

__

For the first one, I'm choosing the principle of movement. Movement is the view's eyes take through the work of art. and is related to repetition and rhythm. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shapes, and colours within the work of art.

My exploration:

1)

This artwork is inspired by the building. When I saw the building, the line of the building create the principle of movement. The line of the building led me to look from bottom to top. To enhance my thoughts, I darken the background, to show clearly the line.

2)

When come to movement, I think of moving inward and outward. Therefore I try out to make my line look rotated so that it looks like moving inward and outward. The artwork are using three different patterns and is arranged to repeat to create.

Final Outcome:

1)

Since this design resembled a building, I changed the tone of the building to give the impression of three blocks. The design demonstrates that, while we are all human, we all have distinct lifestyles, just like our fingers. Our fingers will not be the same length, so we should not compare ourselves to others, or else we would be jealous of others, which will cause us anxiety.

2)

This is the design after I made changes to it. I change one of the patterns to make the design more visually pleasing. This design reminds me that everyone has a different perspective on how to look at things; we shouldn't judge others; we simply need to do our bit and not be swayed by what others say.

Week 03 | 12 April 2022

__

The second principle I choose is the principle of repetition. Repetition can make a design work appear more active. The repetition of design elements creates rhythm and pattern in the work.

My exploration

1)

For my understanding of repetition, use the same thing repeatedly. So I repeated using a rectangle shape to create the design. When I make some rectangles black, I can vaguely see the H. But the results of the design were not to my expectations, so I put colourful colours instead of black colour.

This is the design after I changed the black to colourful colour. And while the design appears to be a night scenery, I added a horizontal line in the middle to create the illusion of foreground and backdrop.

Final outcome:

Exploration:

After finishing my previous design, the results were still not to my expectations, so I created a new one. The design is created with several octagons and circles. To show my design is not so boring, I added diamond shapes inside octagons and aided circles inside the circles. In this design, I am using a light colour tone to design my artwork.

Final:

To generate the principle of repetition, which works with patterns and creates unity, I added diagonal lines by using purple and blue colours and also fill up the colour to create there has another layer at the back. When I finished the work, I saw that there were only two colours in the whole thing, and it looked very dull, so I decided to add a brighter colour. I chose orange, at the back, with a straight line, so that the outcome would look impressive.

For this artwork, it remains to me that there will always be an obstacle in my path whenever I undertake something. As long as I overcome the obstacles, there will always be a way to pass.

Feedback from lecturer

_

Dr. Pouline told me to be brave and try something different instead of only black and white because it seems solid. She also mentions not being afraid to attempt something new or to make the thing look messy. Even if messy, so what, it's also an art.

Self-reflection for the week

_

Weeks 02 are a little stressful for me because I recently transferred into a degree programme and have a lot of tasks to catch up on. But I also try to create at least two design principles to show Dr. Pouline so that I know I'm on the right track. Fortunately, I came up with two designs and received comments from Dr. Pouline, so I'm now confident in continuing to work on my project.
